Maria Pittman College Essay Vs Personal Statement

Usually colleges have their own guidelines when it comes to college essay for admission or personal statements. It depends on what the actual college requires. You should consider that the colleges look at more than just college essays for admission statements; they look at your grades, GPA, class standing, extracurricular activities, and school service before the… Continue

Meaghan Shields Dancing on new ground

I decided even before I left Canada, that I wanted to put a lot of focus into dancing when I came to Israel. To help realize this goal, I packed one of the two pieces of luggage I brought with costumes only! How's that for self-actualization? Since I've been here, things have been st… Continue

Meaghan Shields Favvids

If pressured to say, I would easily call Sera my favorite dancer right now. I have loved her video (many times over) of her troupe Solstice at Tribal Fest 7. It's a definite keeper. I have recently had the pleasure of viewing their new work from TB 09, and frankly, this is the really good shit. Storytelling, mime, musicality to the teeth, and some damn cool moves. Excellent dancers all around, especially Sera the mastermind behind the body work. Get ready to experience some truly… Continue

Elana Ultra Gypsy video

I love the staging for this tribal style piece! Keep your eyes peeled for Arbee... Info from youtube: Choreographer Jill Parker leads the Ultra Gypsy tribal belly dancing troupe, including Rachel Brice, for "the cutting edge" a visionary cable TV show produced by Jerry B in Berkeley, CA in 2001. Directed and edited by D. Sosnoski Continue

FlamencoBelly Accomplishment!

I am so happy! So instead of working on my group presentation for my class at school I am going to write this blog! hahahaha. I'll try and keep it short though! As most of you know I performed my baladi piece at FunkaBelly on November 8th. It was truly meant for the FunkaBelly audience, but its been interesting to see how different audiences in different atmospheres react to it. There is usually a loud round of applause and screaming at the end, but what happens during the performance is what I… Continue

Elana Crochet zyll mufflers

Last night I made some zyll mufflers, and I don't know why I waited so long to do so! Wow!! They really work. There is hardly any sound at all, just a nice cushy thud of zyll hitting fibre (which might be wool or acrylic, not sure). I don't have to worry about bothering the neighbours, or my cats, or even giving myself a headache LOL. If anyone else wants some, I'd be happy to make more!… Continue

FlamencoBelly New and Improved Ala Warag Il Foull Coming!

So I got to Montreal for the 2 week Intensive and Pro course with Hadia. Turns out I totally had to revamp this choreography! I did it in under 2 days!! So what you see right now...I like to call my piece of crap! LOL I have since danced it in Montreal at the Soiree and at a Fundraiser put on by Siham and her troupe Dance Sister Dance. I won't have the Montreal version for a while, although I have a very dark version my boyfriend recorded and we are trying to lighten it. I will however be ab… Continue

Elana FUNKaBELLY - May edition

Funkabelly review for May 2008 Forest nymphs and Nature spirits The Funkabellians unleashed their earthy spirits on May 10! We had a substitute DJ, David Dax, and he got the dancefloor shimmying and shaking. Watch out Medicineman - you have some competition! (just kidding - we still love you Medicineman) I missed the beginning of the night due to a gig with the Om Laila Troupe in Burlington, but we arrived in plenty of time to get our funky bellies on! The woodsy decorations created a l… Continue

Meaghan Shields A Long Overdue IBCC Review

It is with great pleasure that I finally sit down and pen a few things about the recent International Bellydance Conference of Canada that went down in Toronto April 23-27, 2008. Overall, it was a truly amazing experience, with a bevy of diverse offerings both in the workshops and the performances. Internationally-renowned artists from around the world descended on the Hungarian Cultural Centre to fill their eyes, ears, bodies (and closets:) with the beauty that is bellydance. I received somet… Continue

Meaghan Shields Favvids

Musicality, in my opinion, is integral to dancing from a place of grounding and authenticity. This is true in all dance forms, and most certainly in bellydance. This video of Nour, a popular Russian dancer in Cairo, exemplifies channeling the music and having it serve as a source of inspiration for movement. Watch and learn! ""> Continue

Elana Practice this week...

This week I am not going to focus on specific movements, but instead will work on my basic drills and try to make them a habit. It doesn't take very long to go through the list, so there's no reason that I can't do them every day. (except that I'm lazy and would rather sit on the couch! ha ha) I'm going to add hip slides, head circles, chest shimmy and 3/4 shimmy to the list. If I want it to be mor… Continue
