Funkabelly review for May 2008
Forest nymphs and Nature spirits
The Funkabellians unleashed their earthy spirits on May 10! We had a substitute DJ, David Dax, and he got the dancefloor shimmying and shaking. Watch out Medicineman - you have some competition! (just kidding - we still love you Medicineman)
I missed the beginning of the night due to a gig with the Om Laila Troupe in Burlington, but we arrived in plenty of time to get our funky bellies on! The woodsy decorations created a lovely forest ambiance, and the best part is that they were mostly found objects: cedar branches from a place that was trimming their hedge, and sticks that created a
grove of skinny bark-less trees. Hooray for resourcefulness! As well, there were some fun and creative costumes:
Meaghan's fairy corset with flowers blossoming from her bosom,
Jaene's butterfly wings and dress, Chantal's nymph frock and
random fleurs in her hair, and
vines growing all over the Level III class (the vines prevented the cane from falling off my head during a precarious moment in the performance!)
There is always a birthday on the same date as Funkabelly. This time, Roula sang her now-famous "Arabic nightclub" rendition of Happy Birthday to Alyssa from the Mirage troupe. Hope you had a great night, Alyssa!
Performances:
- Mother & daughter Miriam and Bernadette, overcoming personal hardship for their first public performance in a year. It was moving, and I should point out that Miriam is only 12 years old!
- Al-Hambra troupe led by Kelly. I loved the veil entrance and the improv segments!
- Level III class with asaya - (I performed in this one) It was so much fun dancing as forest nymphs, if a little dangerous with the twirling canes and such a large group. Hopefully no one was injured! :))
- Zahira, wearing a stunning green costume. She is so expressive! We looooooove Zahira and want to be her when we grow up! (right Nashita?)
The different styles of music led to unique and individual dance styles - or was it the forest theme that inspired earthiness? Roula was getting down! I loved FaB All-star Chantal's strutting dance and interpretive movement! The
Funkabelly All-Stars always rock the party!!
The hora dance circle got everyone moving - last time there were only a couple of takers, but this month it was popular! It can get a little wild and crazy, but that's all part of the fun. As for the Zar - I sat this one out but thoroughly enjoyed the flying hair!
Now it's time to get ready for the June installment of FaB - Forbidden Flowers! Adorn yourself with blossoms and get your shimmy on! See you there!
